In chapter one Hinrich talks about the art of rhetoric. This art is the way of conversation and knowing when to use certain tactics to obtain the power of persuasion. it is an age old art originating back in Greece, and it was used for creating important artifacts such as democracy and the Declaration of Independence. along with that hinrich goes over a few examples and stories of how he used rhetoric to his advantage. in my own personal chapter one was a great introduction to this book. its has all factors the entice me as the reader to keep reading.

In this chapter, "decorum" a part of rhetoric is the main focus. Decorum is a type of ethos where you appeal to the audiences expectations. in chapter two the author goes over how acting the way the audience expects you to act is a large part in persuasion. Along with this it brings up examples of how dressing can appeal to a crowd and how it can let you earn their affection. One example shown in this chapter by the author talks about the movie "8 Mile Starring Eminem". its talks of how his dress made him fit into the urban detroit club style scenario he was in. my personal opinion on this chapter showed how people of society tend to change the way they act just to fit in.

Chapter six properly titled "Make Them Listen" Goes over the three types of ethos that should be used to persuade your audience. Type one being "virtue" in which you get your audience to believe the same values as you. Type two, "Practical Wisdom" in which you show your street smarts, and that you always know when and where to do something with any occasion. The final type is "Selflessness/Disinterest" in which the audiences interests seem to be your main and only concerns. Personally i believe this chapter is a good way to summarize up what every person who desires to speak well should know this.

this chapter's main focus is one the third part of the ethos set known as "Disinterested Goodwill". Disinterested Goodwill is the act of selflessness and likability. Heinrichs talks about a way of speaking that will make the audience more persuadable than what it seems. it goes over how to seem reluctant with a point that you're trying to prove. along with a way of acting as if an advocate hurts you personally so that sheer logic seems to be an overwhelming solution. My opinion on this chapter is that it is useful in how it shows different ways for you to get your point across and keep a firm standing in your opinion.

Chapter fourteen focuses on fallacies and how they are spotted. it talks about bad information that isn't completely proven. it also talks about bad conclusions. in this chapter it also brings up how to use fallacies to your advantage because using them improperly can affect your ethos appeal. i personally enjoyed this chapter due to the usefulness this tactic would have upon my life.

This final chapter taalks about how america was built upon rhetoric since the beginning. it says although having rhetoricians as leader is a negative it is still something that should be in education. i believe the author had a good point in what he said as i am interested in learning of this art.
